Dear C. Rodwell,
My name is Dillon Romney, a freshman here at CCNY majoring in computer
engineering. At first, I wasn’t sure about who or what I wanted to be as I grew up; but then my
interests in computers grew fondly starting at the age of 9. Then and there my career path was set
ahead of me and I started to learn as much as I can. However, it was a bit harder than I predicted,
figuring out whether or not I wanted to be a software or hardware engineer was something that
took me time to consider. Finally, I decided a hardware engineer is the right choice for my future.
Some short term career goals are to increase my experience in becoming a hardware engineer,
obtaining my bachelor’s degree and being able to graduate in a timely fashion (4-5 years). Some
of my long term career goals are to get accepted into a company that welcomes newcomers and
makes a good working environment, contribute to a potential new computer brand or design that
could sell exponentially and be recognized for our effort, and lastly use my prior knowledge to
gain more knowledge while working for the company that I am in. Becoming an engineer to me
is more than simply pursuing a new career just to make good profit off whatever I design and
build. I like to create and think of new ways to fit demands of the current society we live in
today. Take Apple for example, they constantly come out with new Iphones every year/couple of
years, always doing better than the previous phone that was released. In my mind, I wish to do
something similar to Apple; but instead of making a new Apple product repeatedly I want to
make a computer that can last for a couple years leaving good reviews on the company I will
work at. Creating something with a nice cooling feature so the computer won’t overheat, a great
battery life to where you can do whatever you want for hours on end without recharging. While
this does seem a little ironic for engineers who consistently invent and create things, I just wish
for the public to be satisfied with what I can distribute to them with minimal complaints about
the product. The customer is always right no matter how much you wish to believe you’re
always in the right, they are the ones buying the product at the end of the day. Speaking of the
public, engineers are very innovative when it comes to creativity and thinking of original ideas.
The world is changing and so is the market demand for specific products. Knowing this,
engineers and future engineers would have to critically think of ways to effectively invent new
ideas on the table to help society to be greater than what it is now. Thinking about it, it’s kind of
essential for engineers to bring society to a new era with the products they invent. I want to be
apart of that era and give society something to strive forward to, no matter how minimal it may
be I will make a change in this world.
Sincerely,
Dillon Romney
